An experienced trial lawyer and counselor, Jeff has represented both individual and corporate clients in some of their most sensitive, complex and high-stakes matters. His practice focuses on white-collar criminal defense, regulatory enforcement and internal investigations, frequently handling matters investigated or brought by the U.S. Department of Justice, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and other law enforcement authorities. He also represents hedge funds, investors and companies in complex commercial litigations. Jeff is currently working with Bart M. Schwartz on his assignment as the independent monitor named by the U.S. Department of Justice to oversee General Motors’ compliance with its obligations under the deferred prosecution agreement (DPA) stemming from its recall of defective ignition switches.
Jeff appears regularly before the judges of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York and he has argued appeals before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, New York’s Appellate Division and the New York Court of Appeals (New York’s highest court). He has tried both jury and non-jury cases in a variety of forums, including federal district courts in New York and Ohio, New York State court, FINRA, New York’s Judicial Conduct Commission and the New York City Police Department Trials Commission.
For three years (2008-2011), Jeff chaired the New York City Bar Association’s Professional Responsibility Committee, where he supervised the issuance of reports, commentary and proposals regarding New York’s legal ethics rules.
Before re-entering private practice in 2005, Jeff served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Southern District of New York for six years, where he prosecuted federal criminal actions involving fraud, identity theft, tax evasion, money laundering, labor and employment crime, narcotics, and violent crime. He tried 10 jury trials there and argued numerous times before the Second Circuit. Jeff previously served as a law clerk to the Honorable Edward R. Korman, U.S. District Judge, Eastern District of New York.
Jeff is a cum laude graduate of Harvard Law School and a summa cum laude graduate of Columbia College.
