Avni is a litigator and experienced trial attorney. Before joining Walden Macht & Haran, Avni served as an Assistant District Attorney for five years in the Bronx County District Attorney’s Office. In those five years, Avni gained significant courtroom experience and has tried over 15 felony and misdemeanor cases to verdict, with five of those to jury verdict. Avni carried a caseload of 40 criminal indictments while in a felony trial bureau that spanned a vast spectrum of charges from attempted murder to grand larceny. On each of these cases, Avni conducted all evidentiary investigations, witness preparation, legal research for motion practice, and trial strategy implementation. Avni has presented evidence for and indicted over 100 cases in the Grand Jury; prepared and conducted direct and cross examination of civilian and expert witnesses both in the Grand Jury and at trial; and conducted numerous proffer sessions with potential cooperators. Avni has worked on cases across jurisdictions, in other local New York State boroughs, counties, and in the Southern District of New York to reach global dispositions and negotiations. Avni is a meticulous litigator and handled specific cases dealing with press and media sensitive matters. She was appointed the Bias Assistant District Attorney by District Attorney Robert T. Johnson, and in that capacity worked with detectives in New York City’s Hate Crime Task Force to prosecute hate crimes in Bronx County vertically from arrest to indictment and through to eventual disposition, whether at trial or by plea negotiation.

Avni previously served the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office in Boston, Massachusetts as a certified prosecutor and as an extern for Congresswoman Kay Khan of Massachusetts, working on state level legislation.

Avni is a graduate of Boston University School of Law, where she was the Executive Editor of Communication of the Review of Banking and Financial Law, and a graduate of Northwestern University, with honors, with a B.S. in Social Policy and Education.
